 Carved Gourd - Pala'ai
Designs by Marian Kaaa. She is able to create a unique style of art with the
ipu and its accompanying floral and Hawaiian patterns. The delicate Hawaiian gourd takes
approximately two years to reach maturity before it is ready for crafting. Its thin shell
layering requires careful handling. The gourd or pala'ai was commonly used in early
Hawai'i as containers in daily use, and as musical instruments. These are highly prized
